What The House Church Movement Is Really All About

Good stuff from Leighton on what the house church movement is really all about. He puts the case well: It’s not really about houses. It’s about meeting in a relational context that enables, equips and empowers individuals to exercise gifts of the Spirit for the encouragement and edification of those present. The concert and motivational speaking (Can you tell I come from an evangelical background? Regardless, this can be extended to include the ritual and ceremony familiar to other Christian tribes.) that occurs on Sunday mornings may well have a role to play, but to call that church is in my opinion inaccurate.

Now Cory, you don’t actually believe that every sermon is a motivational talk and every praise and worship segment is a concert in every church, do you? ;)

Have I become that cynical? Perhaps…

You’re smiley makes me think you’re pulling my leg, but in case your not I’ll actually give a serious response. Yes, I think the majority of sermons are of the motivational, self-help type. And I’m glad to have heard many… well, some of them! Yes, I think the majority of what is generally called worship is little more that emotionally charged sing-a-longs. And I’m glad to have participated in many of them! BUT, neither possess either the form or the substance of what we see in the New Testament church.

There… I said it. Looks like I’ll be having my Sunday mornings free if anyone wants to get a coffee. :D

    Hello Cory,

Hope all is well. Sent you an email a couple of days ago but you may not have recieved it. It’s a new account so it may have been mucked up.

Liked you thoughts on the majority of sermons these days. In fact your comments mirror mine of the past few years.

I perused many of your posts in the archives. Are you still doing the house church? Any local “traditional” churchs you feel good about?

Tell Kerri, hi. We should get together with the kids and have a Veggie Tales marathon. Still appreciate you guys turning us onto them. We think of you each time we watch them.

Hope to hear from you. Thanks. Jen says, hi.

    Your brother in Christ,

    Scott

PS: Even though this is an old post, hope you are alerted when a new comment is made.

Glad you found me and left a comment. I responded to your email, and we’ll work out a time to get together there.
