Chatting in the Wee Hours

It’s nearly 3 am, and I’m working a bit from home. Funny, but these late hours can be quite productive with no phone or email to interrupt me. I do have on distraction tonight, however.

Jake is sitting on my lap. He woke up about half and hour ago; his footy-pajamas were pinching his ankles. So we’ve been chatting. Topics covered so far include:

How old he and his siblings were at their first Christmas.
Whether or not he’ll ever be older than his older sister.
Whether or not he’ll ever be bigger than her.
What I’m writing.

I offered, but Jake doesn’t want to share anything with the world.

Call Me Aquila

I’ve grown to value greatly the wisdom and council I’ve received through Frank Viola‘s books and articles. One of his latest articles is, I think, helping me to see the role I am playing in the beginnings of our church community. Finding Organic Church (PDF) is giving me a name, and that name is Aquila.

For those of you not familiar with Aquila, he is the husband of Priscilla. The two worked with Paul, acting as a sort of John the Baptizer for him in Ephesus and Rome. The couple prepared the way for Paul to come and lay the foundation of Christ among believers in each city.

That isn’t a bad summary for what I think Kerri and I have been doing. We have tried cast the vision of the church as we are learning it: a body, a family of brothers and sisters who meet under the headship of Christ building one another up and spurring one another on to love and good deeds in order that the Kingdom of Heaven might be made manifest on earth more and more. And so far as we understand and have experienced the abundant life of the church we can share that…

But we don’t have much in the way of experience gathering in this way. We have only seen dimly through the pages of Scripture and the stories of others, such as the Potter Street Community What we have going here in Dayton is good. I think it’s headed in the right direction. Nevertheless, I am thinking we need help from outside ourselves to enlarge our vision and plant/nurture the seed of Christ as Head.

I have a little something to look forward to… probably not this Christmas, because I’m not sure I can justify $9.75 for ANY movie anymore. Perhaps this summer when the library gets it in. In the mean time, there’s Buy Nothing Day.

I’m preparing myself to be challenged. Last weekend I finished The Secret Message of Jesus; this week I start The Irresistible Revolution; in the queue are The Divine Conspiracy, The Politics of Jesus and Justice in the Burbs. (Peruse them all in my library.) The (secret) message is coming through loud and clear:

“Psst… It’s the Kingdom, dummy.”

Yeah, I can feel the stirring rumbling.

I think I’m ready for it. We’re a bit more than a year in with our little church. We’ve gotten to know each other well over that time, but we are all ready for something more. I wonder, however, what each of us has in the back of our minds? What sort of longing we are harboring or secretly hoping for?

Bring on the challenge.

I Heart My New Plugin

When I discovered that I was going to have to upgrade WordPress, I thought I’d have a look around for new themes and plugins. The new theme I’m still working on, but I’ve already landed on a new plug-in that is proving to be dynamite!

Meet the “Now Reading” plugin. It powers the reading list you see in the sidebar, as well my library. I’ve only just begun using it, and I can already tell I’m gonna love it.

We’ve Done It.

It’s been about two-and-a-half months since we last attended a Sunday morning, song-and-sermon church service. I made note of it last weekend, and asked Kerri, “Do you miss it?”

She thought briefly before replying, “No.”

I’ve missed seeing a few people, but as far as the event itself I haven’t missed it either.

Of course, now’s where the rubber meets the road, yeah? I’ve talked the talk of a home gathering being the best place to learn and express the Kingdom of Heaven. Now to walk the walk.
