Kerri sent me this a few weeks back, and since I don’t get to post many pictures of the kids…

My little girl is growing up. Did I tell you she beat me a Pokemon the other day? Our very first game… I was so excited!
When did she get so big?

90 pounds. That’s about what our kids weigh all together. My back thinks this is an understatement, but the pediatrician’s notes confirm 90 pounds.
This also happens to be the total weight of food Samantha and I dropped off at the Dayton Foodbank. One of the things I wanted to do with our house church is grow into our neighborhood offering opportunities for my neighbors to do Kingdom-bringing work, whether they realize it or not. So, the idea was simple. Print up some fliers and go door-to-door distributing them. The fliers provide some information on hunger and the Foodbank, and they offer an invitation to make a difference: “Next week leave your groceries on your porch, and we’ll be by to pick up the bags.” Then, pick up the groceries, and deliver them to the Foodbank.
We kept to our block, since this was the first time. Out of 36 houses, four participated. My expectations were one - us - so I’m pleased. I’m already planning on repeating the event next Christmas, or perhaps over the summer, “Christmas in July.” As a bonus, I met several of my neighbors face-to-face. I even learned that one is currently out of work. ( ++ Lord, hear our prayer. ++ ) Good seeds are being planted.
During each step, I brought Samantha with me. She went knocking on doors with me; she collected food with me; and she went with me this morning to deliver the food. In addition, she gets an allowance, and the first dollar earned each payday goes in her “Giving” envelope. She decided to give her $9 to the Foodbank. I want her to know this Kingdom-bringing lifestyle from the beginning.
Pardon me while I say, “Yay, us!”

Note to self: Do this more often. It pulls oneself out of the daily grime and adjusts one’s perspective. It also gives one an opportunity to talk about one’s self.
For Samantha
What can I say about my princess?
She’ll never remember my favorite moments with her; she was only minutes old. I suspect there was a minor oversight on the part of hospital, but whatever the reason I held you for nearly 90 minutes while Dr. Patel attended to Kerri. For 90 minutes I held you and stared at this new life. And you stared back. We watched each other for what felt like an eternity.
In that first hour the magnitude of your arrival began to sink in. Kerri and I would ask each other, “What do you think life will be like with a child?” I always answered, “I don’t know.” I had nothing to compare it to, no frame of reference within which to even begin imagining. I could picture life as a father no better than a blind man could picture the Mona Lisa. So, I am forever grateful for that oversight that allowed me 90 minutes with you.
It seems I’ve shifted perspective and am now writing to Samantha as much as about her. Hmmm…
Well, in that first hour you wrapped my around your finger, and I’ve been there ever sense. Aside from your dark hair, you and I are cut from the same cloth… right down to the freckles that dot our nose and cheeks. We clicked instantly. We cuddled on the couch watching This Old House many Saturdays. You slept for hours on my chest. We are best friends already.
I’m thankful for Samantha, and I thank her for easing me into fatherhood.

Samantha, Samantha, what can you do?
I can swim a race. Can you?
Samantha, Samantha, what can you do?
I can pick a flower. Can you?
Samantha, Samantha, what can you do?
I can read a book. Can you?
Samantha, Samantha, what can you do?
I can write a story. Can you?
Samantha, Samantha, what can you do?
I can tickle my Daddy. Can you?
(This was part of Samantha’s Language Arts lesson earlier this week. She was re-writing an existing poem that she read earlier in the lesson. I walked in the door for lunch as they were finishing up, which probably had an impact on the end. Now, I’m posting it before Kerri does.)
