Real Live Preacher Meets Cincinnati Chili

As one who appreciates and enjoys both styles of chili, I had to share this from Real Live Preacher, who hails from Texas. An excerpt:

So when Miss Amy started in to tellin me about this here Cincinatti Chili, as she called it, I couldn’t hardly believe what I was hearin. She said it ain’t hot at all, nary a jalapeno in sight. Instead they fill it with nutmeg and all kindsa other spices and even beans. Now she was as cute as a baby bunny in a pea patch when she was telling me about it, but I couldn’t keep from laughing at the thought of nutmeg floatin in a steamin bowl of Texas red.

Friday Five

If you…

1. …owned a restaurant, what kind of food would you serve?

something with reasonable portions as reasonable prices. i mean, who really needs two whole chicken breasts or a 16 oz. steack to go with their salad and two sides? give me half the food for half the cost and i’ll be healthy, wealthy, and wise.

2. …owned a small store, what kind of merchandise would you sell?

i dreamed of owning a comic shop growing up. well, actually a hobby shop with role playing and war games.

3. …wrote a book, what genre would it be?

i have two books in mind. one is a collection of creative pieces and essays around a central theme, a devotional sort of work. the second is a biography of tijuana christian mission.

4. …ran a school, what would you teach?

critical thinking, either in the context of history, current affairs, or economics

5. …recorded an album, what kind of music would be on it?

probably something tending towards hip hop with its samples and strong beat, though not your typical thug rap.

brought to you by… (music & life) on spiritual people by speech

radio last night & pirates of the carribean on saturday

a mountain dew when i got into work, a couple cakes of coke on the way home saturday, (kroger was having a sale.) and a sausage egg & cheese mcgriddle friday morning.

4. What four things do you need to do this weekend?

since this is monday… i needed to drop my mother-in-law’s tax forms off, get my will signed, prepare for our lead team meeting, and play a little footie.

5. Who are the last five people you talked to?

my wife and son as i walked out the door this morning; my daughter as i went to bed; my mother & sister-in-law as we went home last night.

5. …your favorite thing to do after school?

back in grade school we’d ride our bikes either down to the marina or up to the youth center on base.

Small World

ok, one more quick post before we hit the road.

the illustrious jonny.baker has announced the return of the grace lent blog. what makes it a small word is his link on the lent blog to a small, midwest catholic university, one with a “naff” design. (can’t argue there.) that’s right. my alma mater! university of dayton, class of ’97. couldn’t let this pass without comment.

oh yeah, follow along with the grace community this lenten season, too.

Friday Five

i’m in need of some mindless fun…

When was the last time you…

1. …went to the doctor?

monday two week’s ago, for collywobbles of the blowhole (sinusitis)

2. …went to the dentist?

within the last six months. i like my dentist – have had the same one for 15+ years – so we’re pretty regular.

3. …filled your gas tank?

tuesday morning around 4:30am. wanted to make sure at least one car had plenty of gas in light of the coming day.

4. …got enough sleep?

a few weeks at least. i was close last night, but jacob has started spinning on his back, and he bumped his head on his crib around 4:30am. poor guy.

5. …backed up your computer?

backup? what’s that?

Friday Five

ok, i skipped last week’s cause i wasn’t feeling very daring or risky. i’ll give this week’s a go. for reference, each week the friday five can be found here.

1. Are you superstitious?

no, knock on wood. seriously, not in any real sense.

2. What extremes have you heard of someone going to in the name of superstition?

nothing outlandish. some folks won’t say something for fear that it will come true… or not come true depending on their superstition. that’s about it.

3. Believer or not, what’s your favorite superstition?

there’s this episode of reba where barbara jean, who is quite superstitious, does this spitting and dancing thing every time someone talks about death. kerri and i laughed hard.

4. Do you believe in luck? If yes, do you have a lucky number/article of clothing/ritual?

sure. some people just seem to have good luck: the ball bounces their way, etc. some have bad, but most of us have no luck. (not sure that came out right?) i don’t think there’s much you can do to influence luck. it’s like being a klutz (something i am well-versed in). either your lucky (good or bad), or your not.

that said, i always choose #9 if given the option. also, i hang on to a high school legacy of choosing #69 and avoiding #96 (it’s polar opposite) when possible. .::cue juvenile beavis and butthead laughter::.

5. Do you believe in astrology? Why or why not?

just so we know what we’re talking about, astrology = using birth dates to predict the future, personality type, determine compatibility. a definite no to the first (can’t buy one’s birth date dictating life). there might be something to the last two, but i’ve never paid much attention to it.

Blogger Idol – Week 3

bloggeridol.bmpfor fun i thought i’d participate in this week’s blogger idol. darren can fill you in on the details here.

this week’s theme: “a day in the life of…”

as i type, “a day in the life” plays in itunes, so it only seems fitting on this, the 40th anniversary of the beatles’ first u.s. visit, that this be my contribution:

I read the news today, oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph

He blew his mind out in a car
He didn’t notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They’d seen his face before,
Nobody was really sure if he was from the house of lords.

I saw a film today oh, boy
The english army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had a look
Having read the book,
I’d love to turn you on…

Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.

Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
Somebody spoke and I went into a dream

Ah

I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in blackburn, lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all,
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the albert hall.
I’d love to turn you on…
